FARMINGTON - William L. "Bill" Gibbs, 80 of Farmington passed away Friday, April 4, 2014 at his home in Farmington. He was born March 29, 1934 at Cornwall, son of the late James Frank and Bertha Viola (Huggins) Gibbs. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by ten brothers and sisters; Lena Ruth Gibbs, Solan "Joe" Gibbs, Stella Lux, Edith Leffler, Thomas Gibbs, Glenda Niswonger, James Gibbs, Gayle Gibbs, Vernon Gibbs, and Dorothy Homan. Bill proudly served his country in the Navy from 1952 to 1956. Following his Naval service Bill joined the Iron Worker's Local 396 in St. Louis and began a long career as an iron worker, specializing in large commercial construction sites, and was proud to have been part of the construction team that built the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. After retirement Bill worked for Country-Mart in Farmington, Cozean Memorial Chapel, and served the City of Farmington as the Chairman of the City Planning and Zoning Committee, and as an Auxiliary Police Officer. He was a faithful member of the Pleasant View Assembly of God Church, and an active member of his community always willing to help out and speak up. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him, including his wife of more than 50 years Lanell (Quinton) Gibbs of Farmington, children Janeane M. (Mrs. Jeff) Lang of St. Charles, Lori Ann (Mrs. Dave) Sitze of Farmington, and Craig William (& Carla) Gibbs of Farmington; grandchildren, Taylor Quinton Lang, Brooke Mackenzie Lang, Wyatt David Sitzes, Benjamin Charles Sitzes, Sydney Baird Gibbs, Lauren Marie Gibbs, and two chosen grandchildren Ashley McDowell and Brandon McDowell; brother, Dean Gibbs, two sisters Marie Gibbs, and Wanda Renicke Chandler, brother-in-law, Tom Quinton and wife Janice, and numerous other relatives and friends. Friends may call after 5 p.m. and until 8 p.m. on Monday, April 7, 2014 at the Cozean Memorial Chapel. Visitation will resume on Tuesday morning after 7 a.m. and continue until the time of the funeral service at 10 a.m. with the Reverends Bryan Mills and J.C. Moore officiating. Graveside services with full military honors will be conducted at the Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Farmington, under the direction of the Cozean Memorial Chapel.
