William "Bill" Eugene Matthews Sr.

December 21, 1935 — November 19, 2024

William "Bill" Eugene Matthews Sr., a cherished patriarch, respected veteran, and pillar of his community, passed away on November 19, 2024, in Columbia, Missouri. Born to Lynn Otis and Mary Imogene (Staten) Matthews on December 21, 1935, in Coffman, Missouri, Bill's life was a portrait of dedication, love, and service.

Bill grew up in a time of simplicity and change, and he carried the values of his upbringing throughout his life. A proud graduate of Douglas High School in Festus, he set a strong example of leadership and commitment to education for his family. His journey took him far from his hometown as he honorably served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. His military service was a testament to his courage and patriotism.

Upon returning to civilian life, Bill continued to contribute to his community with the same vigor and integrity that marked his military career. He retired as a supervisor at Trimfoot Manufacturing after more than two decades of dedicated work. His commitment to his fellow veterans was unwavering, as evidenced by his lifelong membership and past commander from 2000-2002 and 2005-2006 of VFW Post #5896 of Farmington. He also served the city of Farmington as a councilman from 1989 - 1997, where his thoughtful insights and steadfast resolve were invaluable.

Bill's faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he was a devout member of Memorial United Methodist Church. There, he was actively involved in the Men's group, providing fellowship and support to many. His dedication to service extended to the younger generation as he transported countless students as a bus driver for the Farmington School District for ten years.

One of Bill's enduring legacies is his instrumental role in spearheading the Farmington African - American Cemetery, ensuring that the contributions of the community's African - American citizens were honored and remembered. He was also a member of both the Douglas High School Alumni Project and the Cultural Diversity Committee of Jefferson County, Missouri, promoting understanding and unity among its residents in remembering the history of Douglas High School and fund raising for scholarships.

Bill's interests were as diverse as his talents. An avid bowler, he enjoyed the camaraderie and competition of the game. His passion for automobiles was evident in his love for attending car shows and working on cars, a hobby that brought him great joy and satisfaction. As a baseball fan, he cherished the game's history and the thrill of a well-played match. And it can’t go without saying, Bill also had a passion for the casinos and a little gambling with the lottery.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 37 years, Annie Laura (Wright) Matthews who passed away in 1994, his parents, and his siblings Betty King, Dallas Matthews, Eddie Matthews, Dewey Matthews, Charles Matthews, and Jeannie Frost, Bill's legacy is carried on by his loving family. He is survived by his children, William "Bill" E. (Marganna Blastenbrei) Matthews Jr. of St. Louis, Carolyn (Floyd) Bridges of Bowie, Maryland, and Kimberly Matthews of Columbia, MO and a special son, Alfred Thomas Frost IV of St. Louis. His grandchildren, Thomas Jackson, Malinda Jackson, and Miyonna Bridges, will miss their grandfather's wisdom and warmth. His sisters-in-law Erie May Johnson of Chicago, Curlie Lee Moore of Chicago, and Sharon Matthews of St. Louis, and his former spouse and special friend, Etta (Rankin) Matthews and her family as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends, will fondly remember Bill's generous spirit and kind heart.

William "Bill" Eugene Matthews Sr. lived a full life, marked by his love for his family, his country, and his community. His memory will be treasured, and his contributions will remain a guiding light for all who had the privilege of knowing him. Bill's life story is not one of an ending, but a lasting inspiration that will continue to influence generations to come.
