Vernon "Vern" Lee Baker of Farmington passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at the age of 88 years. He was born on April 21, 1925, at Irondale, son of the late George W. Baker and Violena (Reeves) Carver. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Woerner. Vern and his family moved from Irondale to St. Louis when he was 11 years old. At a young age he went to work doing various jobs until he was old enough to join the military. He proudly served his country during WWII in the Pacific Theater. While in the Navy he was proud of being a Seabee and enjoyed building bridges, roads and landing strips while he served. When he returned to civilian life he worked in the transportation industry and retired from the Bi-State Development Agency after thirty three years of service. After retirement Vern and his wife, Fern thoroughly enjoyed traveling. They traveled all over the United States, Canada and Mexico. He was an avid model railroader and outdoorsman who loved to relax while fishing in his jon boat. Vern was a faithful member of Memorial United Methodist Church of Farmington. On October 27, 1962 he married the love of his life, Fern Bailey, who survives. Also surviving are two children, Michael Douglas Baker of St. Louis and Sandra Gail Hipes and husband, Bill, of Troy; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill (Rita) Baker, of Kileen, TX and Alvin Dale Baker, of Potosi; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and good friends. Friends may call at Cozean Memorial Chapel on Monday, February 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitation will resume Tuesday morning beginning at 7 a.m. until the time of the service beginning at 10 a.m. in the Cozean Chapel with Rev. Scott Hall officiating. Private interment will be at Williams Cemetery in Licking, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
