Opal Carmen Wright

Opal Carmen Wright of Farmington passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2014, at the age of 97. She was born on June 16, 1917, the daughter of the late James Carroll and Myrtle (Fox) Reid. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold C. Wright in 1998. As the child of a Methodist minister, Opal grew up living in many areas around the state of Missouri. She received her degree in education at Missouri University and later received her Master's Degree. For many years she taught school and went on to become the Director of Elementary Education for the Farmington School District. She received an award for being a pioneer in elementary education which cited her skills for unique teaching methods. For ten years she served as President of Southeast Missouri Teacher's Association. Opal was active in many other teaching organizations and was a member of DAR. In her spare time she enjoyed traveling, camping and trout fishing. Survivors include her son, John Wright of Farmington; three grandchildren, John Wright, Jr., Susannah Cantrell and Caroline Wright; three great-grandchildren, Kristopher Penuel, Carmen Ann Cantrell and Ellen Elizabeth Cantrell; two great-great-grandchildren, Angelo and Josiah; a sister, Darlene Brake; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Maxine Wright; two dear friends and caregivers, Ruth Oliver and Edna Arnold. Also surviving are a host of nieces, nephews and other extended family. Friends may call at Cozean Memorial Chapel on Monday, August 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitation will resume Tuesday morning beginning at 7 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 10 a.m. with Reverend Scott Hall officiating. The family requests memorials to Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Hillview Memorial Gardens in Farmington.
