FARMINGTON - Steve Leyda, of Farmington passed away May 30, 2015 in St. Louis at the age of 81. He was born May 9, 1934 in Bloomfield, Iowa to the late Wilbur and Frances (Curl) Leyda. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, David Leyda in 1990. Steve was born and raised in Iowa where he graduated from Davis County High School and went on to college in Kirksville, Missouri, now Northeast Missouri State, where he was a member of Phi Sigma Epsilon and played on the football team. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. He proudly served his country in he U. S. Army where he played on the Army Softball Team. He taught and coached at Adair-Casey, Wellman, and Davis County Schools in Iowa. He began Leyda Sporting Goods in Bloomfield and later moved the store to Ottumwa. In 1986 he made a move to Farmington where he began teaching Shop at Farmington High School and was the Golf Coach as well. He also was an assistant for the football program and taught Driver's Education for a long period of time. In 2002 he retired from teaching and coaching but kept busy with woodworking projects and, of course, golfing. An avid Iowa Hawkeye fan all of his life, he was also an accomplished gardener who specialized in growing beautiful large tomatoes. Survivors include his loving wife, Carolyn; daughter, Sue (Rick) Smith of Waterloo, Iowa; step-daughter, Amy (Clent) Pullen of Farmington; grandchildren, Matthew Smith, Brad Smith, Morgan Pullen, Sophie Pullen and Coby Pullen; and many special friends. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Cozean Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, June 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. immediately followed by an Elks Service beginning at 3 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held beginning at 5 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Farmington.
