Mary Ellen Smith of Farmington passed away on Friday, January 31, 2014, at the age of 87 years. She was born on November 18, 1926, at Pierce, WV, daughter of the late Edgar Neal Livingston and Stella Pearl (Hopkins) Livingston. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Elmer Smith in 1998. Also preceding her in death was a daughter, Gladys Pearl Watts; two sisters, Twalla Dodson and Waneta Exline and a brother, John Jacob Livingston. Mary Ellen grew up in the state of Pennsylvania where she attended school. She met and married the love of her life, Lyle Elmer Smith on January 5, 1941. They eventually moved to the St. Louis area where they raised their family. Mary Ellen was a faithful member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in St. Louis for more than 30 years where she was an active volunteer helping with many church activities and was a Sunday School teacher. In 1989 she and Lyle moved to Farmington where they were members of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church. She was more recently an active member of the Farmington Senior Citizens Center where she made many good friends. In her spare time she was an avid reader. Survivors include six children, Sandra Lee Smith, Lyle Edgar (Robin) Smith, Mary Lou (Larry Benton) Woolverton, Virginia Ruth (Bob) Kornfeld, Daniel Jacob (Patti) Smith and David Joseph (Pam) Smith; twenty-four grandchildren; fifty-one great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; a sister, Ruth (Lawrence Clifton) Paul; a sister-in-law, Eileen Pittman; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Friends may call at Cozean Memorial Chapel on Sunday, February 2 from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Visitation will resume in the funeral home beginning at 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. followed by the funeral service to be held at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. Monday morning with Reverend Tom Conboy officiating. Interment will be at Chestnut Ridge Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to Season's Hospice of St. Louis.
