Mary Cora Huckstep

FARMINGTON- Mary Cora (Pilant) Huckstep passed away December 6, 2012, at the Camelot Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born on April 4, 1923, in St. Louis, daughter of the late Charles William and Laura Margery (Hawkins) Pilant. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death on November 28, 1992, by her husband, Dr. Robert Arnold Huckstep, M.D., a nephew James E. Huckstep, Jr, step-brothers James and Don McDaniel, step-mother Dorothy McDaniel-Pilant, sister-in-law Elaine Huckstep, and son-in-law Steve Jones. She attended Southwest High School (class of 1941) and Harris Teacher's College (class of 1944) in St. Louis and was a member of Alpha Lambda Chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma. She studied violin at the old Straussburger Conservatory at Grand & Shenandoah, under the tutelage of symphony members. She directed the adult and junior choirs at Compton Heights Christian Church, St. Louis for four years and the adult choir for 47 years at the Farmington Christian Church, where she was an elder. She was a past employee of the Missouri Pacific Railroad in the Auditor of Passenger Receipts office at 13th and Olive in St. Louis until 1948. During her life she was a past member and president of the following: Mineral Area Medical Society Axillary, Nancy Weber Garden Club, Federated Club, Chapter HJ of P.E.O, and Farmington Community Hospital Axillary (1985). She did substitute teaching under superintendent Ray Henry, teaching English to foreign students entering Farmington schools under a Federal grant program. She was a former volunteer for the American Cancer Society's "Reach to Recovery" program 1976-1991. She is survived by son David Robert Huckstep and wife Diane, daughter Carol Sue Jones, all of Farmington, son Stephen Charles Huckstep and wife Vickie of Fenton. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Erica (Jones) and husband Ryan Bertram of Farmington, Jessica (Huckstep) Eschmann and husband Matt, and Robert Huckstep all of Fenton, brother-in-law James Edward Huckstep. Several nieces, other relatives, and many dear friends also survive. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. On Sunday, December 9, 2012, at the Cozean Memorial Chapel & Crematory. Visitation will resume on Monday after 9 a.m. at the Farmington Christian Church with a funeral service following at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Dale Berck officiating. Interment will be at Hillview Memorial Gardens. Memorials if desired may be made to the Huckstep Heart & Lung at Parkland Health Center or the Farmington Christian Church.
