FARMINGTON - Martin E. "Marty" Skaggs, Jr. of Farmington passed away Friday, May 29, 2015 at Southbrook Nursing & Rehab Center at the age of 89 years. He was born December 14, 1925 at Desloge son of the late Jessie M. (Holland) and Martin E. Skaggs, Sr. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son Roger Skaggs, and two brothers Paul Skaggs and James Skaggs. Mr. Skaggs proudly served his country during World War II in the US Army. On February 12, 1955, at Ste. Genevieve County, he was united in marriage to Miss Thelma Christine Lyerla. In this union, Marty and Thelma were blessed with two sons and a daughter. He worked in the Maintenance Department for the Farmington R-VII School District from where he later retired. He was a member of the Doe Run First Baptist Church where he served for many years as the Praise and Worship Leader. Serving The Lord through music was Marty's greatest passion and over the years he served at Little Vine Baptist, Three Rivers Baptist, Genevieve Baptist and many other churches and revivals in the area as a music leader. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him including his wife of 60 years, Thelma Christine (Lyerla) Skaggs of Farmington, a son Rick (& Sandy) Skaggs of Farmington, a daughter Tina (& Mike) Govro of Farmington, ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives, dear friends and neighbors. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at the Cozean Memorial Chapel & Crematory. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in the Cozean Chapel with the Reverends Tim Morgan and Keith Huffman officiating. Interment, with full military honors, will be in the Three Rivers Cemetery near Farmington. Memorials, if desired, may be made to any charity or benevolent organization of the donor's choice.
