Lloyd Leon Brewen, 96, passed away Thursday, May 12 at Community Manor in Farmington, MO. Lloyd was born November 6, 1919, in Flat River, MO, to Joseph and Myrtle (Hicks) Brewen. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Alice (Mitchell), his son Michael, his parents, his sister Irene Bequette and husband John, his sister Alma Cooper and husband Ralph, and his sister Beulah Brewen.
Lloyd married Alice on July 30, 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1943, serving much of his deployment during WWII stationed on Guam. After returning from the war in 1946, he spent many years teaching physical education, coaching the boys basketball team, and eventually becoming the assistant principal of University City Senior High School in University City, MO. In 1966, he moved to Parkway North High School in St. Louis County as assistant principal. He retired from there in 1982, and he and Alice moved from Creve Coeur to Farmington, where Lloyd was active in V.F.W. and the American Legion, served on the library board, and was a longtime member of Memorial United Methodist Church. In retirement, Lloyd was an avid reader, and he and Alice began fishing, and spending many weekends camping at the Big Piney River in Licking, MO. They were also St. Louis Cardinals fans.
He is survived by his daughter Linda Schnurbusch of Independence, KS; his daughter Sally Breuer and husband Michael of Godfrey, IL; five grandchildren, Cory Breuer of Godfrey, IL, Jamie Sharp and husband Joe of Bethalto, IL, Tracy Schnurbusch of Bentonville, AR, Aaron Schnurbusch and wife Zoedy of Independence, KS, Christopher Schnurbusch and wife Shawnda of Bentonville, AR; eight great grandchildren, Austin Gillis, Emalyn, Josey, and Chloe Sharp of Bethalto, IL, Layne and Dylan Schnurbusch of Independence, KS, Sydney and Logan Schnurbusch of Bentonville, AR; and many other family members and friends.
Visitation will be held 12:30-2:30 Wednesday May 18 at Cozean Chapel in Farmington, with funeral services starting at 2:30. Burial at Parkview Cemetery in Farmington immediately follows. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association at alz.org or to the Farmington Public Library.
