FARMINGTON LaVerne Dorothy Burkhart Grotewiel was born in St. Louis on Illinois Avenue on August 16, 1923, to the union of Herbert Charles Burkhart and Edna Mae Friese Burkhart. She passed away at Presbyterian Manor, in Farmington, on September 17, 2022, at the age of 99 years. Those who preceded her in death were her parents, her husband, Willard Calvin Grotewiel, a sister, Audrey Bosslet and brother-in-law, Joseph Bosslet, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Michael and Violet Grotewiel Cullen and a stillborn daughter, Elaine Audrey Grotewiel. She leaves behind her daughter, Nancy Sue Grotewiel Sullivan and her son-in-law, Albert Charles Sullivan Jr., three grandchildren, Matthew Jacob Rohrer (Kristin), Ann Theissen Rohrer, and Sally Diane Sullivan-Shinn (Greg), and six great grandchildren, Jacob Daniel Rohrer, David Matthew Rohrer, Margaux Julia Woods, Simon James Woods, Madelyn Fuller Shinn Usherwood (Matt) and Parker Christian Shinn. When she was five years old, she joined the Southwest Turner Hall where she learned to dance and lead physical education. LaVerne went to Monroe School in grades K-8 and Roosevelt High School in St. Louis. She attended Harris Teachers College with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Physical Education. She obtained her BA in Education in 1940. She taught at Cleveland School for three years while working at J.C. Penney as a cashier after school and in the summers. At 23, she began working at Fox Spring Lodge in Cuba, Missouri as a waitress in the summer. This is where she met the love of her life, Willard Grotewiel. They married on January 30, 1948, in St. Louis. She joined the Presbyterian Church in Cuba after being raised Lutheran. She had a very strong faith in God and began each morning reading her Bible. She taught in Cuba for 30+ years in first and second grades. Visitation will be held at Presbyterian Church in Farmington, Missouri on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. conducted by Reverend Bob Bullock and Reverend Racquel Tomacruz. Interment will be at Kinder Cemetery in Cuba, Missouri. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Manor, or Help the Hungry Bake Sales.
