Josephine A. Matthews

FARMINGTON Josephine A. (JoAnn) Matthews, of Farmington, passed away surrounded by her family on November 20, 2017 at Southbrook Skilled Nursing at the age of 79. She was born May 23, 1938 to the late Joseph and Rosa Mae Thompson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Matthews in 2009; four brothers; two sisters and a great grandson, Chase.

JoAnn, as most knew her, was a nurse for 50 years and next to her family, nursing was her love. She dedicated her life to caring for and helping others. She never met a stranger she didn't love and want to care for. The majority of her nursing career was spent working with Dr. William Johnson and Dr. Karl Killion. One of the high points of her career were two medical mission trips to Jamaica. Her children will remember her most for her dedicated, caring and generous contributions to family and community.

Survivors include her children, Tom and Denise McDermott, their children, Matthew and Adam; Kathy and Tom Donze, their children, Karri Burnett and Katie; Steven; Vicki and Dwaine Pinkston, their children, Shane, Megan Crowell, Kortney Nichols and Alex; Chris and Shirley, their children, Paige, Andrew, Hailey and Grace; great grandchildren, Tori Burch, Annabelle Weekley, Aizley Weekley and Braxton Crowell; a sister, Georgia McDermott; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Friends may call at Cozean Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 from 5 8 p.m. Visitation will resume on Wednesday beginning at 7 a.m. until the service at 9:30 a.m. with Deacon Mike Burch officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or East Missouri Action Agency, Kids' Christmas.
