CHARLOTTE, NC - Jack Milton Cozean of North Carolina died September 19th, 2017. He was born February 21, 1927, in Bonne Terre, Missouri, to the late Rolla Smith Cozean and Elva Octavia (Rinke) Cozean. Mr. Cozean was a retired educator having taught in Elmo, Ferguson-Florissant, and Columbia, Missouri Schools. He was Director of Professional Relations for the Missouri State Teachers Association from 1966 to 1974 at such time as he moved to Charlotte, NC, where he was administrator, instructor, and International Student Advisor at Central Peidmont Community College until his retirement in 1966. Mr. Cozean graduated from high school in Farmington, Missouri and attended Flat River Junior College. He received a degree from Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri and later received a Master's degree in Educational Administration and Counseling from the University of Missouri Columbia. He served in the United States Army from 1946 1947.
He is survived by two daughters, Catherine Elizabeth of Stony Point, NC and Mary Frances Cozean and her husband, Nat Huang; two grandsons, Miles Huang and Jack Huang of San Jose, California; his sister, Caroline Detring of Farmington, Missouri; cousins and a host of nephews and nieces, great nephews and great nieces, and a great, great nephew, Jack Cozean of Sikeston, Missouri.
Mr. Cozean was active in music all of his life having sung in the Bach Choral Society in St. Louis. He was also a member of the chorus which recorded "The Lutheran Hour" for RCA Victor. He sang in various church choirs in St. Louis, Columbia, Missouri, and Myers Park Presbyterian Church and St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Charlotte. In addition, he sang in the "Singing Christmas Tree" for a number of years and in the Charlotte Barbershop Chorus (S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A.). He was active in the Mecklenburg Mental Health Association, having been elected two terms as president. His interests included family, friends, church, music, genealogy, and writing autobiographical stories. Mr. Cozean was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and previously served as an usher, member of the Vestry and in various other capacities.
Friends may call at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, located at 115 W. 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28202 from 9:30 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2017. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by a reception after the service from 11:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Procession to the graveside begins at 12:15 p.m. with graveside services at 1 p.m. at Crown Memorial Park, 9620 Rodney St., Pineville, NC 28134. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation (monetary, used clothing or furniture) to the National Kidney Foundation.
