FARMINGTON - James W. Sloan of Farmington passed away June 14, 2015, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Festus at the age of 82. He was born on May 1, 1933, in Koshkonong, Missouri, to the late James Isaac and Pearl (Braden) Sloan. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Andrew VarVera, and a brother, Lester Sloan. Jim was drafted into the U.S. Army at an early age where he proudly served his country during the Korean War. A jack of all trades, Jim had many varied occupations during his lifetime. He worked as a union carpenter early in his life and later was employed at State Hospital No. 4 as a teacher of special education for construction trades. During the 1980s he was Facilities Manager at the Ruston State School in northern Louisiana. More recently he had been the Facilities Manager at Parkland Health Center from where he retired. Jim was of the Baptist faith and served as a Deacon for many years. A person who never met a stranger, Jim will be most remembered for his sense of humor and his love for his family and church. Survivors include his beloved wife of 45 years, Sharon; six children, Mary Ann Lehman of the State of Kansas, John Sloan of Farmington, Ron Sloan of Farmington, Marcia Price of Farmington, Holly Parmer of Ste. Genevieve and Andrea VarVera of Farmington; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Alice and four brothers, Chester, Tom, Russell and Gary Sloan. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. A gathering of friends and family will be held at Cozean Memorial Chapel on Friday, June 19 from 1 - 2:30 p.m. There will be a VFW/American Legion service at 2:30 followed by a Masonic Service. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. with Rev. David Wright officiating. Memorials, if desired, may be made to Three Rivers First Baptist Church.
