FARMINGTON- James Elisha Hammers of Farmington, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at the age of 87 years. He was born March 17, 1925 at Knob Lick, son of the late Jesse Alonzo and Maudie Viola (Rice) Hammers. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his former wife Catherine (Grooms) Hammers, daughter Nina Marie Barnard,son James L. Hammers, a step-son Ronald Grooms, and two brothers Chester Hammers and Carl Hammers. James was retired from Fred Weber Construction, where he had been employed as a truck driver for many years. Just before and during World War II he worked along side his father with the WPA, assisting in the construction of the Prisoner of War Interment Camp at Weingarten. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him, including his wife Ruby (Bazzell) Hammers of Farmington, five children Brenda Kassabaum of Farmington, Kenneth Hammers of Steeleville, Karen Hammers of Harrisburg, PA, Suzanne Goodwin of Festus, and Carl D. Hammers of Wappapello, a step-son Edward Grooms of Ballwin, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a brother Steve Hammers of Farmington and two sisters Linda Berger of Doe Run and Edith Turner of Farmington. Friends may call at Cozean Memorial Chapel & Crematory on Thursday, February 7, 2013 from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitation will resume Friday morning beginning at 7 a.m. until the funeral at 10 a.m. in the Cozean Chapel with the Reverend Sidney Laxton officiating.
