Homer Herman Kennon of Coffman passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2014, at the age of 91. He was born on April 6, 1923, in Coffman, the youngest of three children to the late William and Nora Caroline (Winebarger) Kennon. He and Gladys Leona Holshue were united in marriage on November 8, 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri with their brother-in-law, Reverend Harold Covington officiating. Gladys preceded Homer in death on August 6, 2012. In addition to his parents and Gladys, his beloved wife of 66 years, he was preceded in death by sisters, Hazel Boyd and Wilma Covington; his son, Edwin Royce Kennon and grandson, Rodney James Clark-Kennon. Homer attended school in Avon, Missouri and went on to join the United States Army. He served as a sergeant and communication specialist in WWII from 1941 - 1945 in the 42nd Rainbow Infantry Division. He received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Marksmanship Badge and Combat Infantry Direct Action Medal for his service. He worked various jobs after the war, including an electrician for the family business, a farmer and dairy farmer. Homer loaded railroad cars at Mississippi Lime Company from 1967 - 1989 from where he retired. Homer was a life-long member of Pine Log Baptist Church. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing bluegrass, country and gospel music with his friends, neighbors and grandson, Nicholas Mills. Survivors include his daughter, Catherine Nora (Norman) Thompson of Coffman; daughter-in-law, Vickey (Edwin) Kennon of Avon; granddaughters, Lisa (Louis) Bigham, Shannon (Derek) Knight, Sara (Shawn Rogers) Litterst, Annette Kennon, Tammy Dailey, Julie Wampler and Penny Womack; grandsons, Edwin (Pam) Kennon II, Jerry Cluck and Michael Cluck; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call at Cozean Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, June 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitation will resume on Thursday morning beginning at 7 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 10 a.m. with Reverend Steven Walker officiating.
