Gladys Leona Kennon

Gladys Leona Kennon of Coffman passed away on Monday, August 6, 2012, at the age of 85. She was born on August 8, 1926, at Camden, NJ, daughter of the late Victor LeRoy and Catherine (Foulke) Holshue. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Edwin Royce Kennon on November 16, 2006; a grandson, Rodney Clark and all of her brothers and one sister. Gladys grew up in New Jersey and as a young woman during World War II met a young soldier from Avon, Missouri named Homer Kennon. She and Homer were married on November 8, 1945 just after he was discharged. They lived in St. Louis and New Jersey for a while before settling down in a country home near Coffman. While raising her family she also worked on two dairy farms. An avid gardener, Gladys always grew vegetables and canned every summer. She and Homer enjoyed traveling around the United States together. Quilting was a favorite hobby of hers and she has made quilts for most of her family members. Survivors include her husband, Homer Herman Kennon, a daughter, Catherine (Mrs. Norman) Thompson of Coffman; ten grandchildren, Lisa Bigham, Shannon Knight, Sara Litterst, Annette Cooper, Tammy Dailey, Edwin Kennon, II, Jerry Cluck, Julie Wampler, Penny Womack and Michael Cluck; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call at Cozean Memorial Chapel and Crematory on Wednesday, August 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitation will resume on Thursday beginning at 7 a.m. until the time of the service at 2 p.m. in the Cozean Chapel with Rev. Al Winebarger officiating. Interment will follow at Mayberry Cemetery in Avon. Memorials may be made to the Mayberry Cemetery Association.
