George A. Matkin

FLAT RIVER George A. Matkin formerly of Flat River passed away on August 28, 2019 at Mercy South St. Louis at the age of 84. He was born March 16, 1935 in Flat River, MO to the late Charles F. and Georgia (Schultz) Matkin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles D. (the late Patricia) Matkin and a nephew, Jay Matkin. George proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Army. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 5896 of Farmington. He retired from Yellow Freight after 36 years of employment as a professional road driver. He was a proud member of Teamsters Local 600. In his younger years, George was a stock car driver and enjoyed hunting and dancing with his wife, Joan. He was a NASCAR fan, an avid reader and loved spending time with his family at his Mallard Lake property. He will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. George is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Joan (Hicks) Matkin of Barnhart, his children, Terri Vickers of Barnhart, Julie Matkin of Dardenne Prairie, and Ellen (and husband Tim) Newell of St. Peters, his grandsons, Justin Vickers, Grant (and wife Katie) Grumke, Will Grumke, Troy Newell and Jake Newell, his great granddaughter, Teagan Grumke, nieces and nephews, Steve and Cindy Hicks, Cheryl and Mark LaChance, Susan Fanning, Cindy and Eric Constance and Kim and Sam Bolling, several great nieces, great nephews and many friends. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 31, from 12:00pm until time of service at 2:00pm at Cozean Memorial Chapel. Interment to follow at Hillview Memorial Gardens.
