DOE RUN Elva Jane Bernadette Lacey of Doe Run, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2016, at her home in Doe Run at the age of 86 years. She was born on September 26, 1929 in the Avon community of Ste. Genevieve County daughter of the late Reverend Amasa Herbert and Corena Jane (Gordon) Vaugh. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband the late Reverend James E. "Jay" Lacey, two sisters, Viola Griffin and Eula Parker and a brother, Norman Vaugh.

Elva grew up in Ste. Genevieve County the daughter of a country preacher, she met Jay Lacey while working together at the Rice Stix shirt factory in Farmington and the couple were married on April 26, 1947. The Laceys then moved to Peoria, IL, where Jay was employed at the Caterpillar Company and Elva for the Princess Peggy Dress Factory. They then moved back to Missouri and Jay soon after entered the service and spent two years in Korea. After his return home the couple purchased a grocery store in Doe Run which they operated for thirteen years then a hardware store also in Doe Run, which they later converted to apartments. Jay received the call to the gospel ministry in 1964 and Elva served faithfully along side him at Bethel United Baptist Church then Bethany United Baptist Church, and for 42 years at the Pendleton United Baptist Church. Elva worked for the Federal Government as a Test Administrator for 23 years. She was also a talented seamstress and owned and operated the Lacey's Fashions Dress Shoppe for 8 years making and selling custom ladies apparel. She retired from all of it in 1993 to become a full-time housewife.

Elva was a member of the Pendleton United Baptist Church of Doe Run. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, cooking and on occasion traveling, but mostly she enjoyed spending time with her many nephews and nieces, dear friends and good neighbors.

She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her, including numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends and neighbors.

Friends may call at the Cozean Memorial Chapel & Crematory on Thursday, February 11, 2016 from 5 p.m to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday with the Reverend Bob Graham officiating. Elva will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Jay at the Doe Run Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Pendleton United Baptist Church.
