Edward Sumski

February 15, 1925 — December 19, 2008

Edward John Sumski of Farmington passed away December 19, 2008, at the Farmington Presbyterian Manor at the age of 83 years. He was born on February 15, 1925, in St. Louis, son of the late Peter and Frances (Szabrak) Sumski. Also preceding him in death were his wife Bernice and two sisters, Laura and Hattie. Mr. Sumski was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ of Bonne Terre and the Bonne Terre Masonic Lodge No. 424 AF & AM. Until his retirement, he was employed by the U.S. Post Office. During World War II he served his nation with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific, where he was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries received in the Salomon Islands. Following his retirement he lived in Bonne Terre before moving to Farmington. His interests and joys included gardening, woodworking, fishing, crossword puzzles, and spending time outdoors. He was an active Masonic Lodge member. He is survived by two sons, Dr. Dennis E. Sumski and wife Crystal of Farmington and Terry F. Sumski and wife Linda of St. Louis; four grandchildren: Matthew Sumski of Barnhart, Sarah (Mrs. Michael) Mainieri of Wentzville, and Brandon Sumski and wife Kelly, and Christopher Sumski, all of St. Louis. Also surviving is a brother, Frank Sumski of St. Louis. Friends may call at the Cozean Memorial Chapel on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Cozean Chapel with the Rev. Sally Ketterer officiating. Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at the Farmington Presbyterian Manor or the First Congregational United Church of Christ of Bonne Terre.
