FARMINGTON - Edith Mildred Burgess age 92, of Farmington passed away peacefully Monday, October 29, 2012 at her home with her children by her side. She was born June 27, 1920 at Farmington, daughter of the late John William and Annie Cordelia (Chapman) Barnes. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband the Rev. John Walter Burgess, Sr., a son John Walter Burgess, Jr.,six brothers, Leonard Barnes, Stirling Barnes, Clyde Barnes, Willard Barnes, Herschel Barnes and Glenwood Barnes, and four sisters Edna Huff, Leanna Burgess, Dorothy Potter, and Lula Ely. Edith and John were married April 3, 1937 at Fredericktown. As the wife of a minister Edith cared for her own family and the church families her husband served over the years, in Michigan, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania. Upon retirement, John and Edith returned to the Lead-Belt and became members of the Esther Church of the Nazarene, where John served as associate pastor until his death in 1988. After John's death Edith moved to Farmington and at the time of her death she was a member of the Farmington Church of the Nazarene. Edith will be missed by all those who knew and loved her including her children, Betty D. Paul and husband Malcom of Foley, AL, Gerald L. Burgess and wife Sharon of Stanwood, MI, Glenn G. (Bud) Burgess and wife Dorthey of Mecosta, MI, Marla J. Walker and husband Jim of Waterford, MI, Wally Mersino and wife Corky of Orion, MI daughter-in-law LaVonne Burgess of Attica, MI, sister Elsie Clark of Lansing, MI, 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives, neighbors and friends. The family will receive friends at the Cozean Memorial Chapel & Crematory on Thursday, November 1, 2012 from 5-8 visitation will resume on Friday after 7 a.m. with a funeral service at 1 p.m. in the Cozean Chapel. Interment will be in Parkview Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the American Heart Association.
