FARMINGTON Doris Jean (Zimmer) Allen of Farmington passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at her home at the age of 89 years. Jean was born on June 1, 1928 in Farmington, Missouri, daughter of the late Edward Adam and Della Arizona (Barnes) Zimmer.
Jean graduated from Ste. Genevieve High School in 1946, Flat River Junior College in 1956 and Washington University in St. Louis in 1963. In high school, she played volleyball and served as Homecoming Queen. She married Marvin Eugene (Gene) Allen on August 19, 1950 and they remained partners in life for nearly 66 years until Genes passing in 2016. In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by her beloved identical twin sister, June Burle Govro, a brother, Eber Zimmer, five other sisters Goldie Holst (& Elmer), Eleanor Huck (& E.P.), Norma Wilson (& Woodrow) Florence Roth (& Ronald) and Donna Rickus (& Kenneth), sisters-in-law, Beverly Jane (Allen) McGuire and Kimberly (Showmaker) Allen and brother-in-law, Homer Henderson.
Jean was baptized into the Christian faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church on November 26, 1933 and was confirmed on March 29, 1942. She was a life-long member of St. Paul and cherished every opportunity to actively serve her church community and share her faith. She was a member of the LWML, Womens Club and the Ruth Circle Bible Study group. Jean also loved volunteering at the Presbyterian Manor Gift Shop. Besides her children and her family, Jeans passion was teaching. After beginning her career at Burks, Busiek, Avon, Weingarten and Chestnut Ridge schools, Jean taught in the Farmington public schools for 31 years. She never tired of her third-grade classes and later, teaching remedial reading and math. After retiring from teaching, Jeans second career took her to the First State Bank in Farmington for nearly 15 years, where she fulfilled another of her passions (accounting) as a bank teller. After her second retirement, Jean and Gene enjoyed traveling to California and Colorado to visit their children and grandchildren, spending many holidays creating special memories. Jean loved life and loved to travel and jumped at every chance to travel with her daughter, Jane to Mexico and Hawaii and her sisters and nieces to Branson, Nashville and other exotic locations.
Jean will be missed by all those whose lives she touched and those who dearly loved her her children, Rebecca June (Allen) Crawford (& Thomas) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jane Anne Allen and Randall Marvin Allen of Farmington, two grandchildren, Adrienne Michelle Kiesel (& Mark Galley) of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Jacob Allen Kiesel (& Emily Hackbarth) of Ukiah, California, three great-grandsons, Asher Henry Paul Galley, Bowen Rhodes and River Stevens Kiesel, a sister, Joann Henderson, sister-in law, Reba (& Bobby) Mell, brother-in law, Kenneth (& special niece Malaina Kai) Allen, brother-in-law, Donald (& Wilma) McGuire, a recent addition to the extended family who, like her great-grandsons, never failed to bring a smile to her face and a light to her eyes, Archie Joe Stroup, all of Farmington, special friends Janet Laut, Maryann Burns, Jeannie Gegg, Doris Thomas, Patty Gibbons, life-long neighbors, Peggy Wigger and Lee Kreitler, numerous favorite nieces, nephews, other relatives, former students and dear friends.
Friends may call at the Cozean Memorial Chapel & Crematory on Friday, October 27, 2017 from 5-8 p.m. Visitation will resume on Saturday morning from 7-9 a.m. at the Cozean Chapel. A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Dr. James Prothro, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at the Pleasant Hill United Baptist Cemetery in Ste. Genevieve County. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran School, the Pleasant Hill United Baptist Church Cemetery or the Farmington Elks Lodge #1765 Scholarship fund.
