Dessie Juanita Shy of Ellington and formerly of Farmington passed away on Monday, February 11, 2013, at the age of 91. She was born June 21, 1921, at Stone Hill, MO, daughter of the late Frank B. and Rosie (Stricklin) Crocker. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Cornell Shy in 2008; three sisters, Alta Crocker, Opal Crocker and Eunice Barton; two brothers, Howard Crocker and Bernell Crocker. She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Carol Shy, a grandson, Kevin Shy as well as her beloved sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie Crocker, Geneva Shy, Margaret Shy, Ralph Shy, Rayburn Barton, Bob Gaines and Clarence Shy. Dessie attended a one-room school in Nealscreek near Bixby. An excellent student with perfect attendance, Dessie walked three miles each way to and from school. Later she was a cook at the Hawk Lane School where the children enjoyed her chocolate cake and biscuits. She and her husband, Cornell, owned a farm in Iron County where they both worked hard with their cattle and crops. She also helped in the family sawmill business. She enjoyed going to church at Black River Baptist where she was active with the summer bible schools. In 1994 she and Cornell moved to Farmington where they joined the Nazarene Church. In her spare time, Dessie enjoyed sewing and quilting as well as working with flowers, gardening and camping. Survivors include a son, Jim Shy of Black; a granddaughter, Christi (Mrs. Jason) Johnson of Ironton; two grandchildren, Briar Johnson and Gage Shy; a brother, Jerry Crocker and wife, Naomi of St. Louis; a sister, Shirley Gaines of the state of South Carolina and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call at Cozean Memorial Chapel & Crematory on Thursday, February 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitation will resume Friday morning beginning at 7 a.m. until the service at 10 a.m. in the Cozean Chapel with Reverend Frank Nash officiating.
