PARK HILLS - Dale F. "Smiley" Hovis of Park Hills passed away Sunday, October 11, 2015 at Mercy Jefferson Hospital at the age of 71 years. He was born May 17, 1944 to the late Carl Alvin Hovis Sr. and Mildred Berneice (Agnew) Hovis. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by grandparents, August and Blanche Hovis, a sister, Mary Clayton, and brothers, Carl, Jr. (Bud) Hovis and John Hovis. Most everyone knew Dale as Smiley, a name he was dubbed early in life. He was a 1962 graduate of Farmington High School and went on to trade school where he learned diesel mechanics. He was employed with Yellow Freight for 22 years in St. Louis. He always enjoyed his summers watching the Central Rebels Softball Team. After he retired in 1994 he enjoyed fishing, hunting and running around with his old dog, Buck. Many will remember Smiley for his sense of humor and his ability to play creative practical jokes. Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Sandra (Lee) Hovis; children, Avery (Theresa) Hovis of Farmington, Deron (Lisa) Hovis of Jackson, Missouri, Elliott (Jackie) Hovis of Farmington, Tonia Skaggs and John Radford both of Desloge; twelve grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Frances) Hovis of Hillsboro, Missouri and Larry Hovis of Farmington; six sisters, Bernice (Bobbi) Stevens of Fredericktown, Glenda Chatman,, Farmington, Carol McClellan, Fredericktown, Gail Nicholson, Somerset, Kentucky, Martha Hovis of Park Hills and Lois (Dennis) Johnson of Farmington; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Also surviving are special in-laws, like his own sisters and brother, Ernestine Elders and Sidney (Paula) Lee, all of Park Hills. Friends may call at Cozean Memorial Chapel on Friday, October 16, 2015 from 5 - 8 p.m. Visitation will resume on Saturday morning beginning at 7 a.m. until the funeral at 10 a.m. in the Cozean Chapel with Rev. Gabe Lee officiating. Interment will follow at Knob Lick Cemetery. Memorials, if desired may be given to the donor's choice.
