Catherine Genevieve Messmer

Catherine Genevieve Messmer of Farmington passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2013, at the age of 91. She was born on August 1, 1922, in St. Louis, daughter of the late Henry and Catherine (Brummel) Wessel. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Messmer in 1999; two sisters, Frances Jost and Margaret Wessel and a brother, Joe Wessel. A native of St. Louis, Catherine and her husband Clarence moved to Farmington 43 years ago. They owned and operated the Family Medicate Pharmacy in Park Hills. She was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Farmington for many years. She and Clarence enjoyed taking wonderful trips to Rome, Switzerland and many other places. They especially loved their walks on the beach at sunrise and sunset. Catherine was a fantastic homemaker who loved spending every moment she had with her family and friends. Survivors include a son, Thomas Frank Messmer of Doe Run; a daughter, Christine Maria Stacy, and husband, Arley, of Farmington; grandchildren, Robert Thomas Layton of Granite City, Rebecca Dawn Layton of Farmington and Cody Dawn Naes of Arcadia; great-grandchildren, Evan William Voyles, Braden Thomas Ashcraft, Jacob Robert Thompson and Taryn Rae House; a brother, Robert Harold Wessel of the state of Iowa; a host of nieces, nephews and many good friends. Friends may call at Cozean Memorial Chapel on Sunday, September 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitation will resume Monday morning from 7 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with Father Rickey Valleroy as celebrant. Interment will be at New Calvary Cemetery in Farmington. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
