Catherine Fern Baker

Catherine "Fern" Baker of Farmington, passed away November 4, 2016 at Lincoln County Nursing and Rehab in Troy at the age of 87. She was born on August 18, 1929 in Licking, Missouri daughter of the late Calvin Bailey and Susie (Mitchell) Bailey. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Vernon L. Baker in 2014; two sisters, Bessie Lanier and Pearl Bailey; a brother, Wayne Bailey and an infant sister.

Fern grew up in Licking where she graduated from high school. She moved to St. Louis and went to work as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where she retired after more than thirty years. She and her husband Vern retired to Irondale after building a home there. Eventually they moved to Farmington where she lived until recently. She was an active member at the Memorial United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading and belonged to two book clubs. Fern was a people person who had a large group of friends, old and new. She will be remembered as a very kind hearted person who nurtured all of her loved ones.

Survivors include her children, Michael (Roxie) Baker of St. Louis and Sandra (Bill) Hipes of Troy; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandson; a sister, Faye (Gene) Whitaker of Canton, GA and a brother, Bill G. (Mary) Bailey of Murphreesboro, TN; nieces, nephews and other extended family.

Friends may call at Cozean Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 from 5 8 p.m. Visitation will resume Thursday morning at 7 a.m. until the service beginning at 10 a.m. with Reverend Scott Hall officiating. Interment will follow in the afternoon at Williams Cemetery near Licking, MO. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the American Heart Association.
