Caroline Chastain

August 30, 1933 — February 12, 2016

FARMINGTON Caroline Saunders Chastain of Farmington, fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, passed away Friday, February, 12, 2016 at Parkland Health Center in Farmington at the age of 82 years. She was born August 30, 1933 in New York City, New York the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Edward Watts Saunders. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. William Edward Williams and Dr. Henry Martindale Williams.

Caroline graduated from Chapin School and attended Bennett Junior College. Caroline made her debut in New York at the Junior Assemblies in 1951. She married Dr. Charles William Chastain on November 27, 1954. Together they raised six children.

Caroline achieved great success in breeding, training and showing Arabian horses. She owned and operated Caryswood Arabians for over 25 years where her horses won numerous regional and national awards. Caroline also mentored many local horse lovers and helped them establish successful horse programs and founded the Ozark Rough Riders 4-H Club.

Caroline was an avid gardener and life member of the Nancy Weber Garden Club. She brightened the world around her with the beautiful flower arrangements that she made. She was named the Presbyterian Manor Resident Volunteer of the year. She was a member of St. Joseph Church for over 56 years. She volunteered at the church, school and lovingly shared her faith as a teacher in the PSR Program. Caroline was also an avid card enthusiast playing bridge and canasta regularly with beloved friends.

Caroline personified motherhood. She was the rock, the mother of many people, animals and ideas. She never met a being that she couldnt and wouldnt take under her wing. From her own children, to cousins, distant relatives, strangers and journeying travelers on horseback to a farm full of animals, Caroline took all in without fear or hesitation.

Caroline is survived by her six children, Charlie (Dorothy) Chastain of Farmington, Jane (Jerry) Troutner of Houston, Texas, John Chastain and fianc Pam Hull of Appleton, WI, Katie (Rod) Rhodes of Farmington, Carrie (Mark) Riedi of Green Bay, WI and Edward Chastain, 13 grandchildren, Charles William Chastain V, Derrek Chastain, Colton Chastain, Matt Rhodes, Ashley Rhodes, Alex Rhodes, Parker Troutner, Sarah Troutner, Curtis Chastain, Christopher Chastain, John Northcutt, Faith Birdsong and two great grandchildren, Henry and Kadin Northcutt. Caroline is also survived by her special Goddaughter, Chelsea Chastain.

Friends and neighbors may gather to visit, share and celebrate Carolines life at the Cozean Memorial Chapel & Crematory on Friday, February 19, 2016 from 5 to 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Joseph Church on Saturday, February 20th at 10 a.m. with Fr. James Dyer officiating. Interment will be in the Hillview Memorial Gardens in Farmington.
