Betty L. Hammers

FARMINGTON - Betty Hammers, of Farmington, passed away at Parkland Health Center on December 5, 2021 at the age of 91. Betty was born June 26, 1930 to the late Ervin Wampler and Pearl (Smith) Wampler. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse E. "Bud" Hammers; her aunt and uncle who raised her, Bill and Lula Sturgeon; two brothers, Bob Wampler and Glen Wampler; and her daughter-in-law, Marla Hammers. Betty grew up in rural Ste. Genevieve County on a farm with the Sturgeon family. In 1949 she married Jesse "Bud" Hammers. She worked at the shirt factory in Farmington until 1972. Soon thereafter she began a career in housekeeping at the Southeast Missouri Behavioral Health Center and worked there until her retirement in 1995. Betty loved to play Bingo and anywhere there was a game she was usually in attendance. She was a great cook and her specialties were potato salad and coleslaw. She was very fond of her beloved cat, Blossom. Betty had a very sweet disposition and a kind soul. She will be sorely missed by all who loved her including her son, Michael (the late Marla) Hammers; her daughter, Judith (Charley) Abney; five grandchildren, Chris (Becky) Webb, Leslie (Bryan) Gegg, Carie (Cory Wolff) Thomure, Kelly Webb and Pam Hammers; eleven great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren; two brothers, Larry Wampler and Donald Wampler and sisters, Bonnie Wampler, Nancy James and Alma Burnside. A host of nieces, nephews and extended family also survive. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 9, at Cozean Memorial Chapel from 5 - 8 p.m. Visitation will resume Friday morning beginning at 7 a.m. until the service at 10 a.m. in the Cozean Chapel with Pastor Bob Webb officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Farmington Pet Adoption Center.
