Arthur F. "Sonny" Meyer

September 11, 1931 — April 7, 2015

Arthur F. "Sonny" Meyer, of Farmington, passed away April 7, 2015 at the age of 83. He was born in Ste. Genevieve on September 11, 1931 to the late Francis and Agnes (Basler) Meyer. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Willa Dean (Thurman) Meyer in 2009. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Anne Meyer, and daughter-in-law Marianne (Nackley) Meyer. After Sonny graduated from high school in Ste. Genevieve he tried his hand at being a farmer which didn't work out, the drought changed his mind. He enlisted in the U. S. Army and proudly served his country for four years. While in the Army he trained as a helicopter mechanic which prepared him for his longstanding career as an entrepreneur and operator for 55 years of Meyer Auto Sales. Sonny along with his beloved Willa Dean sought to promote Farmington and the surrounding communities through their civic service including their help in founding and in chairing the Country Days annual celebration beginning in 1978, serving on the fair board, and service to numerous other charities. A faithful member of St Joseph Catholic Church, Sonny believed in serving his faith through involvement with St Joseph's Elementary School, the annual church picnic and various other fund-raising efforts. Sonny will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him including his children, Cynthia Ann Butterbaugh and husband Thomas of Paducah, Ky, two sons, Larry Joseph Meyer and wife Sharon of Scott City, Mo. and Kevin Lee Meyer and wife Robin of Farmington; eight grandsons, Austin, Adam, and twins, Eric and Sean Butterbaugh, Ryan and Brandon Meyer, and twins, Seth and Zachary Meyer; three great-granddaughters; his sister, Rosella "Tootie" (Joseph) Bahr of Vandalia, MO. and numerous other relatives, friends and church family. The family will receive friends at Cozean Memorial Chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 10, 2015. Visitation will resume in the funeral home on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Farmington with Father Rickey Valleroy as Celebrant. Interment with Military Honors will follow at New Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers remember Sonny's service to the community through memorials to the Sonny and Willa Dean Meyer Scholarship Endowment Fund or to St. Joseph Catholic Church Secret Santa Fund.
