Alta May Johnikin

Alta May Johnikin of Farmington passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2011, at the age of 88 years, 11 months, and 9 days. She was born on October 15, 1922, at Farmington, daughter of the late Harry Lee and Essie May (Stevens) VanSickles. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank J. Johnikin; three brothers, Rev. Ulysses VanSickles, Charles VanSickles and Woodrow VanSickles; two sisters, Marie Buchanan and Jessie Patterson. A life-long resident of the Farmington area, Alta attended school in Farmington. After school she went to St. Louis to work where she met her husband Frank. They lived in Augusta, Georgia until Frank's death in 1957 when she returned to Farmington to live with her parents. She will be remembered by many as the "Candy Lady" at the Ben Franklin Dime Store where she worked for many years. Alta was notorious for her very sweet disposition and her contagious smile. Alta is survived by her nieces, Thelma Spawn, Helen Thornton, Alma Zimmer, Peggy (Mrs. Gerald) Durham and two nephews, Raymond Patterson and Daryl Patterson. Also surviving are a host of friends and relatives. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Borrego, Dr. Beyer and the staff of Safe Harbor Hospice and Community Manor for their tender loving care. Friends may call at Cozean Memorial Chapel from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27. Visitation will resume Wednesday from 7 a.m. until the service beginning at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fred Killian officiating. Interment will be at Three Rivers Cemetery in Farmington. Memorials may be made to Safe Harbor Hospice or Genevieve Baptist Church.
